Martial Arts Code of Ethics Part II

NO PAIN

Train accurately and correctly, using the principles and techniques as they are taught. Learn to become aware of the various ‘signals’ your body sends to you; understand the difference between discomfort, due to demanding training and hard work, and damage, that is occurring due to improper posture or technique, overexertion, and so on. The goal is to make yourself stronger but avoid injury. Push yourself to the limit, know when to rest.

NO LAUGHING

Do not laugh at yourself; concentrate more. In time, you will find success with diligent effort. Do not laugh at others. Support the other members of your gung fu family with positive encouragement.

NO COMPLAINING

Do not make petty complaints due to being tired, bored, and so on. Instead of wasting energy complaining about the insignificant, put the effort into your training. Remember, complaining is of no benefit. You must discipline yourself to continually break through your limitations to reach higher levels.

NO EXCUSES

It is human nature for individuals to take credit for being the cause of events which make them happy and to put the blame outside of themselves when things go wrong. Ask yourself how much you have put into something and what it is you wish to get in return before you make excuses.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

Never say, “I can’t.” You can do anything anyone else can–it’s just a matter or hard work and diligent practice. Nothing that is worth attaining will ever come without effort.

ALWAYS PUT FORTH A FULL EFFORT

The amount of effort you put into something will reflect the results, determining the degree of success you reap in the future.

ALWAYS CONCENTRATE WHILE TRAINING

Leave personal problems at the door. Concentrate on your gung fu training only.

NEVER SAY SORRY

It is contradictory to the objectives of sparring training to apologize each time a proper technique has been well-executed. Never saying ‘sorry’ also means exercising caution and safety to avoid unnecessary injury to oneself and others.

TRAIN SERIOUSLY

Do not socialize, joke, or fool around in class. You are wasting everyone’s time. Respect your time for training and take it seriously. There will be plenty of time to socialize after class.

ALL ARE EQUAL

In the Chung Wah System, no one is special; everyone is treated the same, starting from Entry Level of the system through upper levels. Do not assume you deserve special treatment or recognition.
