In the Qing Dynasty (AD1644 to 1911), political turmoil resulted in the southward migration of Shaolin proponents. A second temple, founded in Fujian province, saw the development of many more styles of Shaolin kung fu, including the five famous Southern family styles: Hung, Lau, Choi, Lei and Mok. Wing Chun, Dragon, White Eyebrow and White Crane are also well-known Southern Shaolin styles. Southern Shaolin styles are characterized by strong, powerful stances, short-range power generation, and intricate hand techniques.

Both Northern and Southern Shaolin styles utilize empty hand and weapons forms, equipment training, qin na, as well as internal and external power training.
